Preventing Diseases

The big four

If we take a look at the major diseases we discover one of the most amazing facts about death: 80% of us die of only four diseases and their aftermath: Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Cancer and Alzheimer's.

Lowering the risk of developing one of these four to the extent of avoiding them altogether, will take us a long way regarding extending our healthy lifespan.

Preventing Diabetes

Although some people have diabetes as a result of a genetic defect, most of us (> 90%) develop the disease as a breakdown of insulin regulation and production, after long-lasting abuse of the body due to inadequate diet, contamination and lack of exercise.

Even worse than the disease itself are the incredibly destructive aftereffects of the continuously high blood sugar levels and the even higher temporary spikes in blood sugar and insulin. Especially for our eyes and our neural system, paving the way for follow-on diseases like Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative  diseases.

The good news is that if we follow the diet and exercise described in the 'foundation' chapters, make sure to regularly detox and achieve mental balance; we can reduce our risk of developing type 2 diabetes to near zero.

Even when the disease has already been diagnosed, it is possible to manage blood sugar levels through diet, exercise, detox, and mental balance, sometimes even to a point where neither medication nor insulin injections are required anymore.

Preventing Cardiovascular Disease

Just like diabetes, most of us will not get some sort of cardiovascular disease, like a heart attack or stroke due to bad genes or an unfortunate adverse situation, but as a result of bad diet, lack of exercise, toxins and destructive stress. And again, by following the advice from the foundation chapters, we can significantly reduce the probability that we have to deal with this kind of disease.

Cardiovascular diseases almost always have several causes, with distinct types of damages building up over the years to finally erupt in a catastrophic event like a heart attack or a stroke. We must not fool ourselves here: these events cause dramatic and irrecoverable damage that even the best therapy today cannot reverse. E.g.:

  • A substantial percentage of people undergoing bypass surgery suffer from a permanently lowered IQ, probably because the heart has to be arrested during the procedure

  • A stroke damages the brain and thus irrevocably deletes a substantial share of our mental capability

  • A heart attack at least partially destroys the heart muscle, thus permanently reducing our aerobic capacity

The good and surprising news here is that even up to right before such a catastrophic event, we can take the proper countermeasures regarding diet, exercise, detox, and mental balancing, to reverse the damage which has already built up over time.

Medical interventions like statin drugs to lower LDL - as convenient as they might look like a possible solution - are utterly useless in regard to prevention of heart disease or the probability of a second catastrophic event.

The article on lifeextension.com on the causes of cardiovascular disease is a good overview of the numerous risk factors involved. However, keep in mind the article is already some years old and does not incorporate the latest knowledge. E.g. that cholesterol is not necessarily a root cause of the disease, but sometimes just an aftereffect of bad diet, lack of exercise and toxins and that "low fat" is not the way to go.

Preventing Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease that makes us dramatically lose our mental capabilities and leads to premature death.

There is no known cure for the disease, and the root cause of Alzheimer's is still unknown. However, a set of risk factors has been identified that foster the outbreak and progression of the disease. Many of these risk factors can be either eliminated or at least substantially reduced by implementing the foundation building blocks of nutrition, exercise, detox, and mental balancing.

Additionally, we can supplement with compounds that are known to alleviate the symptoms, slow down the progression or fight the risk factors leading to the development of this terrible disease over time.

Preventing Cancer

Whenever we are confronted with the occurrence of cancer, be it in an acquaintance or somebody close to us, it looks like this is an out-of-the-blue event — all of a sudden this person is diagnosed with cancer, as a worst-case outcome of life's lottery.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Cancer is a process that is almost always more than a decade (or even longer) in the making before today's medicine can diagnose it. And we do have a high degree of influence on the probability of whether it will hit us or not.

Cancer starts with a single cell that mutates into the first cancer cell and is not killed off immediately by our immune system. And our body and the immune system allow this cell to proliferate without sufficient intervention to suppress its growth. Yes, cancer may have genetic causes, but far more often lifestyle choices and toxins are the reason for this first mutation, and the inability of our body to deal with the anomaly while is still in its early stages.

There are four levels of intervention that allow us to dramatically reduce our "bad luck" in the cancer "lottery".

First, we can minimize the probability of mutations by implementing the building blocks of the foundation to remove a significant burden from our bodies regarding toxins, an ongoing assault on our cellular integrity and numerous other risk factors involved in the creation of cancer.

Secondly, by implementing the foundation, we free our immune system from unnecessary work, so it can focus more on the crucial tasks like killing the cancerous cells right in the early stages.

Thirdly, again by implementing the foundation, we create a healthy environment within our bodies which is not suited for cancer growth.

At the fourth level, we can supplement with substances that have proven to:

  • selectively induce cell suicide in cancer cells (apoptosis)

  • hinder the growth or the spread of cancer cells

  • eliminate deficiencies in our body that allow it to fight cancer more efficient

  • help create a healthy environment that is unsuited for cancer growth

It is amazing what these compounds can achieve, even on an individual basis.

E.g., bringing a low vitamin D level back up to a healthy range can reduce the breast cancer risk in women by up to 75%. That is lowering the risk to 1/4!
